Plan of the city of Besançon, painting by Pierre d’Argent, 1575.

Have you ever wondered where modern educational institutions come from? Many of them are in fact the heirs of very old institutions, dating back to the Middle Ages. The University of Franche-Comté is one of them, with a particularly curious history. Indeed, it was not originally located in Besançon as it is today, since it first made its debut in another city: Dole. Over the course of 600 years, the university was shaped by many external and internal factors, becoming a renowned place of learning in Europe.
